Baudeclaire's Flaneur

Updated: Dec 10, 2019

Baudeclaire's Flaneur is a particular character who traverses the streets of the city as an observer of contemporary life. This person-

-Has no visible income.

-Has urban and contemporary styled clothing.

-Is within and yet apart from the crowd.

-Is aloof and unreadable.

-Strolls to observe the sights and sound of their surroundings.

The Flaneur was invented by the artist, Charles Baudelaire and had a monumental influence on the late 19th and early 20th century literature.

To prepare ourselves to flaneur around Margate the following day we used this technique as we moved around the university compound. The point of flaneuring is to come across something by chance due to the lack of a goal or plan.
