Product Research: Similar Products

Updated: Dec 10, 2019

To make the best product that I can I need to research products that are similar in purpose and in design so that I can find their flaws and use that knowledge when it comes to designing my product.

When presenting ideas in the group, I suggested a pair of Augmented Reality (AR) glasses designed for deaf users, that produced real time subtitles to the user to read. We ended up choosing this product. I produced some very quick designs as shown below:

I briefly looked into the pros and cons of the design sketch that I had done and made notes and annotations around the product.

Google Glasses-

The first noticeable thing about the Google Glasses is its sleek and modern design, I think this is crucial to having our product a success. I believe that people would be more inclined to buy a product if it is designed to be the least disrupting to their aesthetic. That means we should consider making the product small and compact.

Another very important quality of the product is that it is hands free which means that it is much safer to use when cycling for example.

These glasses are designed to multitask and able the user to perform multiple actions such as be in a call as well as look at a map - it is meant to help the user complete actions due to their convenience.

This product has been improved and become the 'Glass Enterprise Edition 2', which is designed to help businesses produce their products faster and to aid their employees to work more efficiently.

Microsoft HoloLens-

The Microsoft HoloLens is a product that is meant to make the activities of your day easier and overall make your life more efficient through the nature of augmented reality.

When looking at both the Google Glasses / Glass Enterprise and the HoloLens is that they both have different methods of displaying the augmented reality image - The HoloLens uses a holographic lens which covers a large portion of the users face like a VR headset, on the other hand the Glass Enterprise has a much smaller screen that is in-front of the users right eye - covering a much smaller portion of the face. In our final design of the product it is likely that we will use a very small lens like seen in the Glass Enterprise.

North Focals Smart Glasses-

When researching further into other types of smart glasses I came across this product, the North Focals Smart Glasses that acts like a smart watch but in the form of glasses and a ring controller. I watched a video that looked into it's
