Portrait of JMW Turner

JMW (Joseph Mallord William) Turner was born on the 23rd of April 1775 in the Convent Garden in London. He lived in a middle class family, with his father being their provider by working as a wig-maker. His mother's struggle with her mental illness worsened when Turner's younger sister died. It was then at this point that he was sent away to live with his uncle sparking the start of his artistic career.

William Turner enrolled into the Royal Academy of Art at the age of 14. He opened his own gallery in 1804 and 3 years later became of professor at the Royal Academy of Art. He passed away on the 19th of December 1851 at the age of 76.

JMW Turner explored the weather, sea and effects of light within his paintings. This can be seen in his paintings such as the 'Heroine of Trafalgar', the 'High Mill' and the AAAAAAAAAAA

The first picture on the right is the Heroine of Trafalgar in which Turner explores the effect of natural lighting coming through the clouds and fog at the horizon, producing a layered effect and from there creating a sense of distance perception as well as time.

The Fighting Temeraire was oil painted in 1837 by the artist Joseph William Turner in the peak of his career. The Temeraire was a well know ship due to its service in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, in which the English Navy fought against the French and Spanish during the Third Coalition of the Napoleonic Wars.

Many people requested the government to have a painting created in his memory. This painting is in a sense a tribute to Admiral Nelson who was killed by a nearby French ship during the battle. The battle took place in the Atlantic ocean on the Southwest coast of Spain in which the English fleet had 27 ships to face of against 33 French and Spanish ships. The English left victorious because of Admiral Nelson's plan of battle.
