Capturing Rochester

Updated: Dec 10, 2019

When exploring this task I tried to focus on the nature and culture of Rochester. I travelled around taking photos of the historical culture of Rochester including the Cathedral and areas of the castle.

I managed to capture the poverty in our culture through the images of the homeless and their living conditions on the streets. The lack of warm tones and saturation in the picture was used to display the dull their dull lives and the cold environment they lived in, as well as the dirt and grunge filter I had applied on it.

I experimented a lot with the use of colour, in several of my photos I have created them in monochromatic with varying levels of contrast. For example I managed to edit one of my photos of the Knife Angel to be of only two tones: white and black. I also explored the use of the aperture size to change the focal distance. This effect of this can especially be seen in the close up pictures of the flowers due to the background being blurry and the objects in the foreground being in focus.

ORIGINAL VS EDITED NIGHT IMAGE

I used Photoshop to turn the first image into a night time scene by changing the contrast, brightness and curves of the original image. I had used a mask to remove the original day time sky and replace it with darker night sky of my choice. Some additional clouds were added to attempt to make the scene more natural looking.

This same sort of method was used when editing the image below to make it into a sunset with a silhouette of me in it:
