Creating Logos

Updated: Jan 20, 2020

Originally I was going to do my work on the problems of climate change, believing that the Australian Wildfires would help give me some ideas. I realised that many people were also doing this same idea so I decided I should switch to something else that still had the same subtopic.

I decided I would work with the topic of the dying coral reefs and the diverse life that they are home to.

The final design is nothing like what I started with. Below is the process that I took to get the final design.

I played about with several images of underwater life and specifically coral reefs. What I ended up doing was reducing the index colours of the image to a select few. From here I looked through the image that I had edited to see if there was anything that I believed could become a good logo. I chose to pursue the idea of turning one of the turtles into a logo of sorts.

I created a duplicate layer (as a backup) and then separated the turtle from the rest of the image. From there I created a gradient background. The image was too vibrant so I reduced how vibrant the colours of the turtle were.

I then experimented with adding God Rays and changing their blending options until I found that Addition was the best in my opinion.

I think the God Rays really added to the overall appeal of the design as it prevented the background from being dull.

However I was not satisfied with the result. Most well designed logos are simple and generally vectorgraphic with simple designs. This did not match that so I decided I would start again.

I did some research on other aquatic, vectorgraphic logos and found this:

I really liked the idea that the design was within a vector drawn animal so I decided I would try and accomplish something similar. Through some trial and error with moving around and deactivating specific layers I ended up with this simple design:

I thought that the design was clear through the bold colours and shapes. I would like to experiment with changing some of the colour slightly and cleaning up the edges of the logo.
