My final response to the memento project was a short collection of animations that could all be used within games are either cutscenes or main menu camera loops. When reading the quote "Among the millions of objects people encounter in a lifetime, few become such reminders of people, places or events" (Petrelli, 2008) I think about about and consider how some of the most important and memorable people and experiences can lave behind a memory and a legacy that we are reminded of whenever we see a specific item or location. This quote specifically provides me with a modern response to memento while my actual work for the project does carry the same message however in a more fantasy format.
Compared to my previous projects I included a lot more contextual research and sketches this time. This was something that I found to be greatly influential within my work as the scenery seemed to become more grounded and natural within their own reality. They felt like they could be real due to my research making the scenes more defined and authentic. I worked to produce more brainstorms and I believe that this greatly expanded my creative ideas as well as provided me with examples of modern artists and historical events to research.
I could potentially explore different methods and themes towards memento instead of sticking to so much of a fantasy theme, A very large amount of my work consists of animations so I hope that during the next project I can become less dependant on working on animations and see what it is like to include more gameplay into my work.
I think that this project as a whole has made me more aware of different approaches to work as well as how to come up with better researched concepts that feel more rooted within the different worlds and realities that I create. This project has also taught me how to keep going even when I don't have any more motivation left. When a large portion of my work became corrupted I lost all hope but I started again and pieced together whatever I could of my project so that I could still do the best that I can.
I have documented my notes as well as the entire creative process as it was recorded, however I know that I need to improve on documenting my creating choices and why I make them. I also got into the bad habit of making blog posts that were closer to weekly updates then smaller daily blogs. Apart from this I believe I have done a good job of documenting my notes, research, sketches and creative workflow when producing my animations and scenes. In future I plan on creating larger mood sheets and more often so I am providing myself with a greater variety of references and inspiration.
This project allowed me to produce quite a large amount of original work that I am proud of. I think the turning point during this project was when I came to really appreciate how important the contextual research was to my work. It was at this point that I believe the quality of my work increased. The concepts I produced when using contextual research make them feel more grounded and robust within their own realities.
During this project I explored the meaning and presentation of memento a lot, however I know that I latched onto the of fantasy and statues soon into the project, that meant that I ended up excluding ideas such as modern mementos. In the next project I am going to make good habit to not become so specific with my work so fast.
After completing the work for this project my ability to conduct research and produce concepts that are unique and complex in some ways has greatly increased becoming more defined and efficient. My creative workflow has definitely improved thanks to this project, I hope to enhance it further during the next project too.
