I am having to re upload this after having some errors and not realising the original post was no longer public!
I began by looking at references and other professional users of Photoshop and found an artist that I really liked, their name was 'Benny Productions' and here is a link to their Youtube Channel where they showcase and upload tutorials as they do their work: https://www.youtube.com/c/BennyProductions/videos
Benny had the incredible skill to use Photoshop and create a large variety of designs and concepts, such as taking an image of an old car and using filters to make it look brand new again, as well as take key frames from movies and turn them into posters. I watched his videos on creating realistic highlights as well as how he lays out his posters and the formats he used.

Video on creating his own poster for the Mandalorian show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-Om33VtSgQ
I found his videos drastically inspiring and informative however I was not at all able to create results similar to his due to having much less experience with the program and poster design in general.
Here is an example of one of the test posters I made, I was experimenting with the use of masking layers and blending them off into the black background. This was not designed to look natural with lighting, it was just a combination of tests.
One of the designs that I also sound interesting and considering using a similar concept was one of the posters created for the film, 'Shawshank Redemption'. I was intrigued by the concept of having part of the background image and removed with something brighter and more saturated. This was something that I considered but ultimately didn't pursue.
When working on different concepts for my poster I considered and looked back at screen shots from my animation to see if any of them could work as a background of a poster, I considered these three:
I experimented with the last image of the window as I had two versions it, one in the dark and rainy apocalypse and the other was set before everything went wrong in which it was sunny and had a mother and daughter together. I used a mask layer and blended the two images together so that they overlapped and some areas of the image were dull and dead while others glowed with the joy of the past.
I also considered some external imagery from online, these included:
I considered a variety of images that included nature, urban city environments at their prime as well as at the point of their destruction. I wanted to look at all of the images and explore ways of creating a contrast between nature and the city.
I created another experimental image in which I tested some layouts without any filters or blending at all so I could simply consider the position of composition of what I was making:
These test concepts used low quality images so that I could clearly and easily consider the layout and form of the poster without having to spend time creating good looking affects. Overall I would say this part of the project was my weakest as I just don't have the experience or skill when it comes to designing promotional work or using photoshop, but it was fun nevertheless.
