Recording foley sounds

Updated: Feb 3, 2020

Before recording the sounds required for the film I had to watch the silent film many times so that I could take notes of each individual sound I would have to record. These sounds also had notes about what was causing them and the materials involved.

These sounds included:

- Metal hitting metal

- Sawing (not to be done at UCA)

-- "Swoosh" sounds

- Lick

-Page turn

-Cheer

-Cog turn

-Engine

-Pop

-Metal creak

I recreated these sounds with metal pipes hitting the floor, getting Micheal to make slurping sounds, turning a single page next to the microphone, adjusting the pedal on the office chair to make it creak and making a popping sound with my mouth. The other sounds were recorded at my home as I didn't have required equipment at UCA. These included the sounds of the engine- made by recording my lawn mower. I also got some of my friends to cheer into the microphone, I increases the pitch of this audio clip to make it sound more cartoon like and childish.

I found this exercise very fun and it was a brief insight into the world of Foley Art.
