I wanted to research historical events so that I could gain ideas and inspiration for possible project themes. I began by researching into WW2 and different covert operations that took place during that time period. I looked into Operation Mincemeat, Operation Eiche and Operation Gunnerside.
1) Operation Mincemeat was a British covert operation in which the British planted false military documentation on a dead body found by the coast of Spain. The body had been dressed in British Navy uniform to convince the Germans and Spanish that this was a legitimate piece of documentation. The documents spoke of a false operation stating that Britain planned to attack Greece and Sardinia. This was all to draw the German troops away from the true target which was Sicily in which 160,000 troops attacked.
--The idea of misinformation and leading people away on a red herring seemed like an interested game mechanic to me and something that would make the game fun to play and require skill.
2) Operation Eiche was a stealth operation executed by a team of German Commandos sent to rescue Mussolini, as Hitler wanted Italy to continue fighting in the war. The rescue team descended onto the mountain by hang gliders and proceeded to destroy the radio system to prevent communication.
--I thought that the idea of limiting information and the importance of how your movement was an interesting mechanic that could work well in a stealth game against AI (artificial intelligence) enemies.
3) Operation GunnerSide took place in February 1943. A group of British trained Norwegians, who had been exiled parachuted onto a frozen plateau which was near a Nazi controlled site which was being used to research the construction of Atomic bombs. The objective of the operation was to destroy the site and the research it contained. These British trained soldiers had to sneak past minefields and German soldier sentries. Bombs were planted at 'Heavy Water' chambers, on the soldiers escape they detonated the bombs crippling the production of Heavy Water for the Germans.
These 3 operations have helped me come up with ideas for interesting and unique mechanics that could be used in a stealth game. If I were to go down the route of developing a stealth based game, this research has given me some ideas what the player can do to avoid the AI (artificial intelligence) enemies, these methods could be by creating distractions and avoiding getting into the line of sight.
I also had the idea of creating an interactive VR (Virtual Reality) game that involves some sort of SciFi space experience which could be flying a space ship or exploring an alien world. I began to research into what it is like to experience a space ship lift off as well as what it is like to walk on another celestial body. I began to watch interviews with astronauts that described what the journey to space was like. One of the interviewees was the NASA astronaut, Megan McArthur, she described the initial takeoff by stating that "you're going from not moving at all, to 26 times the speed of sound in only 8 minutes" and that there is a "tremendous sense of acceleration"..."not something you can prepare for". She described the flight to be "very smooth" once you've detached from the Solid Rocket Boosters.
--I continued thinking about the idea of space and thought of two games that follow these similar themes, these being 'Subnautica' and 'No Mans Sky'. Both of these games are open world games with elements of space flight and have VR editions.
Here are two videos that display the immersive gameplay that the VR editions of the game provide:
