The history of Posters Part2

Updated: Jan 6, 2020

The begin of World War 2

The start of the Second World War brought change to the method of creating posters again. Now the method of Lithography was no longer being used to produce the mass of posters.

Society was making posters through the method of Photo Offsetting. Photo Offsetting is a method of printing that uses a linear and systematic approach to creating an image on paper.

Once again posters were used to spread propaganda and the political views of the state.

This is one of the most iconic posters of the time:

This icon and design is still used in Pop Culture merch today and is referenced in many modern films.

Offset printing

The video below goes through the process in great detail, fast and effectively.

The process of Offset Printing is as follows:

-Digital image files are separated by their colours and are laser edged onto coated aluminium plates.

-Each of the plates are loaded onto a roller called the 'plate cylinder'. On each full turn of the roller the non-image areas are dampened with water through water rollers.

-Vegetable oil bases ink is applied onto the image area of the plate through a series of rollers.

-This image is then transferred / offset onto another cylinder roller producing a clear final image.

-Paper sheets are sent through the printing press at regular intervals by jets of air ensuring only one piece of paper is released at a time.

-The paper sheets are rolled between the 'blanket cylinder' and the 'impression cylinder', the image is then printed / transferred onto the paper.

-This process continues as it moved on to receive the next colour.

The 60's

Many remember the 60's with its 'Psychedelic Culture' which spurred on many artists from all creeds to start using Psychedelic designs within many of their poster designs.

As you can see the Psychedelic designs did not only affect the designs of posters but designs within fashion.
