The word 'propaganda' originated in 1622, when the Pope, Gregory the 15th gegfgwsfgegfgsggfgsudf

Propaganda was similarly used then as it is now. It's main objective was to convince others to agree and believe their opinions on politics and religion.

Propaganda is mostly used by people who have power as they want to convince as many people as possible that they are right. Propaganda is used most often and most effectively during war. For example during WW1 and WW2, propaganda was used to convince civilians to join the fight. The Government also used propaganda to hide the failed attempts on the front line, to prevent moral from dropping back at home. Propaganda would be reported in within the Media as if it was fact.

“No person shall by word of mouth or in writing spread reports likely to cause disaffection or alarm among any of His Majesty’s forces or among the civilian population.” - Defence of the Realm Act. This quote is from an Act passes by the government that states that information that could reduce moral or spread "alarm" in the front lines or back at home would not be tollerated. It was a legal way of preventing the harsh truth about the war to be spread.

WW2

During the Second World War, Hitler saw the impact that propaganda had on people and new that it would be vital to convincing the people that he was right. Due to this he made Joseph Goebbel the Minister of propaganda.

Goebbel was a German Nazi politician. He was a very close associate of Hitler and was a powerful speaker who largely contributed to the rise of Antisemitism within Germany.

At this point of time, propaganda was mainly spread through speeches, posters and the media.
