Gaming is an ever growing and thriving element of the entertainment industry that has become a large part of countless people's lives, including my own. Experiencing immersive new worlds and visual storytelling is what draws me in the most, so I began developing my own environments, games and animations to further explore the possibilities of these worlds.
Whilst teaching myself 3D modelling and coding in applications including Blender, Unity and UE4, I learnt about conceptualising, game developing workflows and time management which in turn taught me about accomplishing project briefs to a deadline. A solid understanding of the programs has enabled me to create projects for my portfolio to a high standard. I believe this course is ideal to further my learning of all aspects of games design that I enjoy working with so much and I am looking forward to rising to the challenges ahead as I dig deeper into the industry.
I am currently studying at the University of The Creative Arts on the Creative Media Production and Technology pre-degree course. My time at UCA has influenced me as a creative student greatly; I’ve gained a variety of important skills that have not only improved the quality of my work but also my personal development. I have completed numerous projects involving group based assessment and presentation. Applying what I have learnt at UCA about film editing and shot composition to my storyboards has allowed me to create strong narratives and atmospheres I could incorporate into my second year chosen specialism of game design and cinematics. In addition, the critical thinking, analysis, problem solving and presentation skills I have developed are key characteristics for a game designer when working within a team of any size.
Previously, I was selected to undertake the responsibilities of Head of House, Prefect and CCF member, promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. All of these roles required me to represent my school, as well as showing confidence as a leader. I have completed my Bronze DofE and volunteered to work in a café, as well as Silver Service waitering at various Black Tie events. I took a lead role in four school productions and also worked backstage building props. In 2017, I was a finalist in the ISA National Art Competition. Whilst studying at UCA I’ve been developing an online portfolio of work consisting of cinematics and gameplay, including examples of Sci-Fi and dystopian worlds in a format that could be incorporated into either a game or film. These can be found at www.freddiemasterson.co.uk. I am proud to look back and see the progress that I have made since I started to compile this portfolio. The quality of work that I’ve produced is something that I believe will make me a great candidate for your course as I already have experience creating high quality results and your course will allow me to further improve my skill set.
Outside of studying, I had the opportunity to create promotional material for the company ‘80s Classical’ for which I edited footage of their live shows into promotional videos to be used on their website, YouTube and other social media platforms. I also contributed artwork to a commercially released adventure game. I enjoyed my time working with professionals within the industry and greatly appreciate the opportunities I was given.
I am a keen student with a positive attitude to learning and I am looking forward to improving my skills in readiness for a career within the gaming industry. I thank you for your time and consideration and hope to become a part of your community in September.
