Using my concept sketch as reference I began to create a digital environment from it. The entire process has been recorded and will be uploaded to Youtube and this blog post will be updated with a video link to it.
edit: Link is now available-
As the video will display, I start on working on the basic layout first working on the landscape form and texturing, after this is done I move onto placing foliage around the scene in a way that looks natural and suits the composition of the scene. Most of the trees and plants end up changing location or form slightly as the scene progresses. Usually my final step is to create the lighting however this time I wanted to experiment with how the scene looked even before the statue was within the scene. Once the statue was in place I began to add the environmental details such as the bridges and ladders, this concept was greatly inspired by Star Wars Ep 6 and 7 in a very subtle way.
The city within the trees made on the Mood of Endor in Ep 6 is what inspired to me created these bridges connected by trees and the sculpture, providing insight into how I wanted to visually present my message. The message itself became more detailed after I had researched into work that almost parallels my own. I rediscovered the scene from Star Wars Ep 7 in which Rey is living within an old abandoned AT-AT which was once a powerful destructive machine that has crumbled into a home for this scavenger.
After the statue was added to scene I then started to add final touches to the camera angle, lighting affects and post processing. The image below is of the scene getting close to the final render. I mainly used green and brown hues so that there was a strong connection to nature and the mysterious. The use of fog in the scene during this part of the working process made it look a little washed out of colour.
For the idea of this piece I tried to transform something once powerful into something rudimentary and forgotten. I made some adjustments to the texture of the of the sculpture and increased the scale so that there is this larger then life sensation.
The settings for my post processing volume are below:
Directional Light:
-Intensity: 13
-Light Colour:
-R: 255
-G: 183
-B: 134
-Indirect Lighting Intensity: 1.91
-Volumetric Scattering Intensity: 0.1
-Light Shaft Occlusion: True
-Light Shaft Bloom: True
-Bloom Scale: 0.001
Exponential Height Fog:
-Fog Density: 0.5
-Fog Max Opacity: 0.97
-Start Distance: 5000
-Volumetric Fog: True
-Scattering Distribution: 0.6
-View Distance: 10000
Post Processing Volume:
-Min Brightness: 1
-Max Brightness: 1
-Chromatic Aberation:
-Intensity: 0.46
-Start Offset: 0
-Global Saturation: 1.1
-Global Contrast: 1.23
-Colour Grading LUT: 0.38
-UST Negative
-Ambient Occlusion:
-Intensity: 1
-Radius: 108
Overall the lighting and the post processing settings produced this dream like affect that connects really well to the theme of memento, I think this test scene was a great success in deepening my understanding of the project.
As seen in the screen shot above I made some adjustments to the camera height so that the view was not so cluttered with ground foliage. The fire was moved into the foreground and to the right to try and reduce the amount of objects on the left side of the scene as it was left side heavy. Even with the slight adjustments the dream like state has remained which is perfect!
